Petite Suite, L. 71a by Claude Debussy

On March 1, 1889, 26-year-old Claude Debussy and his former Paris Conservatory classmate 24-year-old Jacques Durand sat down at a piano in the Durand family salon in Paris to premier Petite suite, CD 71a for piano, four-hands. The work had recently been published by the publishing company of Jacques’ father, Durand-Schoenewerk & Cie in Paris, France on February 12, 1889.

Jacques recalled that Debussy was nervous before the performance, and he had urged Jacques not to go too fast. But no sooner than they had started, Debussy began to hurry. Jacques simply could not hold Debussy back.

The suite has four movements:

I. En bateau

II. Cortège

III. Menuet

IV. Ballet

This SuperScore edition includes 3 versions of the suite. See the details below.

MIDI performances of both parts are included along with a 76-page commentary (with French translations). Performers can mute or unmute the playback of left or right hands of either the Prima or Seconda parts. A separate pedal track (including both damper and una corda pedals) is available to mute or to unmute. Play along with one or both hands while the MIDI performance plays the other tracks at any tempo.
